29 May Congrats to June Ann
Congratulations to Ireland’s 85-year-old world champion, June Ann Byrne on being invited by Bernard Giudicelli, President of the French Tennis Federation to the Presidential Box for Roland Garros 2019, to mark the 60th anniversary of June Ann reaching the Semi-finals of the Mixed Doubles at the French Open.
June Ann is a great role model for women in sport. Playing on Centre Court for the Mixed Doubles semi-final at Roland Garros is only one of her many career highlights over the years. Some of her greatest achievements include;
- Playing at Wimbledon where she was defeated by the eventual winner in the juniors 16-14 in the final set after three-and-a-half hours.
- Winning the championships of British Colombia.
- Playing on TV in New York when she was only 21 and had never even seen a television.
Not only is June Ann a great role model for women in sport, but she is a prime example of how tennis really is a sport for life. From taking up tennis in Rushbrooke in 1946 to claiming the over-85 women’s doubles title at the ITF Super-Seniors World Championships last year, June Ann isn’t ready to hang up her rackets just yet!
