26 Sep The McWeeney Trophy
The annual match between the CAI and the CA selection sides was held at Carrickmines last weekend and, for the third successive time, the CA went away with the trophy. Not even the presence of its original presenter, Myles McWeeney, could get the Irish over the line and a final score of 15 – 9 left no room for argument.
The new manager of the CA side, Alison Jones, had brought a fresh team and they took to the Carrickmines lawns like ducks to water. 2 -1 ahead after the opening round of doubles, they never fell behind and while the CAI had pulled back to 10 -8 by lunchtime on Sunday, the final session of singles matches was won 5 – 1 by the visitors.
Star player on the Irish side was Patsy Fitzgerald, who was awarded the Maugham Quaich as the best individual player, having made several complex delayed triple peels while winning 4 out of his 5 games.
